FIT provides fellowships of up to £8,000 for UK-focused research that promotes and delivers transport as a basic right and tackles climate change and emissions from transport.

How much will FIT give in funding?

FIT usually awards up to £8,000 for a fellowship.

Do I need to be currently studying or have a particular background to secure a fellowship

There are no set criteria to be awarded a fellowship; however, you will be asked to detail your relevant academic or professional experience on the application form, noting why you are best placed to carry out this research.

Any fellowship application will be assessed as to whether it furthers FIT’s priorities.

Please note that we don’t normally fund tuition costs.

Can I include additional materials with my funding application?

Each application should be accompanied by a full and detailed budget, per the guidelines on the application form. This can be emailed separately to the Grants Manager at admin@integratedtransport.co.uk

There should be no need to include any documentation in addition to the application form and budget, as all relevant information relating to your application should be detailed within your application form; our trustees do not have time to read supplementary documentation. However, we can occasionally make an exception in cases where additional supporting information is directly relevant to the application. If you would like to submit additional information under this exemption, please contact the Grants Manager.

What will give my fellowship application the best chance of success?

Research outputs

All successful fellowship applicants will be expected to produce the following as a minimum:

  • A final research report of a maximum of 50 pages, for publication on the FIT website and wider dissemination. The research report and recommendations should clearly link to FIT’s vision and outcomes.
  • A two to four page standalone executive summary of the research report.
  • Six-monthly progress reports to FIT.

Any other outputs and deliverables specific to your particular fellowship will be detailed in the award letter.

Application process

Please complete and submit the application form below; this will then be reviewed by our Grants Manager. Some proposals may be turned down if they do not meet our criteria, or more detail may be requested.

Suitable proposals will then be forwarded to trustees, with final decisions made at FIT Board meetings.

Deadlines by which to receive applications are as follows:

  • 20 February 2026 (for decision at the March Board meeting)
  • 21 August 2026 (for decision at the September Board meeting)

Applications must be received by 23:55 on the above dates. We advise submitting proposals in advance of these deadlines in order to resolve any application queries before the decision making meeting.
