Focus of work
20’s Plenty for Us advocates for 20mph as the appropriate speed limit on streets where people walk, live and play. Founded in 2007, the not-for-profit organisation assists and empowers community campaigns promoting wide area 20mph (30km/h) limits in local authorities to replace the default national 30mph (50km/h) limits.
It provides a focussed set of skills and experience to assist decision makers responsible for transport, health, environment, social justice and equality to create enhanced urban and village conditions.
It now has 600 local campaigns throughout the UK and beyond. It also engages with the UK government and devolved governments in seeking change to the national limit and also works at a global level to influence adoption of appropriate 30km/h urban and village speed limits for sustainable development and road danger reduction.
Impact
- 28 million people in the UK now live in places which have either adopted 20mph as the limit for most urban/village roads, or are in the process of doing so
- This includes all of inner London, most of the largest UK urban authorities, and many shire counties
- 20mph or 30km/h limits have become the accepted best practice for where motorised vehicles mix with pedestrians and cyclists
- 20’s Plenty has worked with Welsh communities, politicians and officials to pave the way for Wales to set a national 20mph default urban/village speed limit from 2023
- 20’s Plenty is recognised as a global leader in the advocacy of 20mph and 30km/h speed limits as the urban/village norm
- 20mph or 30km/h limits were adopted by the UN and WHO as the sole focus of the 2021 UN Global Road Safety Week and a key intervention for the UN 2nd Decade of Action on Road Safety 2021-2030.
