Focus of work
Twenty-six years ago, local authorities were given the power to implement a workplace parking levy (WPL); however, only one council has ever done so. Using the experience of its unique Climate Leadership Academy and new Clean Air Network, this project from UK100 brings together eight local authorities to learn how to develop and potentially introduce a WPL to improve air quality and fund better public transport. A visit to Nottingham will provide real-life insights into the only city in the UK to successfully introduce such a scheme and its impact 10 years on. The project will also create simple tools and resources to help more areas take action and scale up sustainable transport solutions. Knowledge will be shared more widely across UK100’s network of strategic and local authorities, helping innovative and practical ideas spread and grow nationally.
Impact
Through this project, UK100 will:
- Enable local authorities to move from initial interest to a clear, practical understanding of how WPLs can support integrated transport systems.
- Create strong connections between councils across the country, forming an ongoing community of practice for continued learning and collaboration.
- Provide accessible tools and real examples that make it easier for more councils to consider developing their own WPL approaches.
- Increase national awareness and interest in WPLs, encouraging more local authorities to consider them as a realistic solution.
