Climate Perks

Empowering people to choose flight-free holiday travel by removing barriers to clean travel, enabling frequent flyers to choose lower-impact transport without sacrificing annual leave.
Climate Perks

Focus of work

Climate Perks is an employer-facing scheme empowering people to choose flight-free holiday travel. Participating organisations offer two or more paid ‘journey days’: additional annual leave that employees can claim to cover the extra time taken for overland travel. Through Climate Perks, staff also receive discounts on low-carbon holidays and tailored support and inspiration for booking flight-free trips. Climate Perks removes barriers to clean travel, enabling frequent flyers to choose lower-impact transport without sacrificing annual leave.

Impact

Climate Perks targets the most frequent flyers with an innovative, effective intervention that removes key barriers to low-carbon travel on a mass scale. Approximately 80% of flights leaving UK airports are for leisure purposes, with 15% of people taking 70% of flights. These frequent flyers are generally young professionals who are money-rich but time-poor. They are aware of the climate crisis, and many want to take action, but the time required for overland travel is a major barrier to emissions reduction.

By encouraging employers to offer additional paid leave for clean holiday travel, Climate Perks removes this time barrier, meaning frequent flyers do not have to sacrifice annual leave to change their transport habits. The scheme also helps to remove other barriers to low-carbon leisure travel, such as its perceived complexity and greater cost.
