Friends of the Earth Scotland’s Traffic Reduction campaign gives grassroots groups the skills and networks needed to put pressure on councils and build political support for a safer, cleaner and more sustainable transport system.
The project, which received two grants from FIT, targeted four key city councils, working with existing community groups to build broad support for traffic-reduction measures that residents want to see in their area.
Impact
Key campaign achievements:
- Contacting Councillors in every Scottish local authority, briefing them on what transport and climate targets must be met locally and nationally, and how they can help to achieve this
- Supporting local campaigners to successfully persuade Highland Council to restrict traffic on Inverness main thoroughfare, Academy Street
- Glasgow’s Low Emission Zone will be launched, fully and finally, with the most polluting vehicles restricted from the city centre
- In Aberdeen, the council are regenerating the beachfront with more active travel infrastructure than originally planned
- Perth and Kinross Council are starting the delivery of cycle infrastructure across the city
