Focus of work
Good Journey believes everyone should have access to culture, leisure and nature, without needing a car. They want every visitor attraction in the UK to welcome people by train, bus, bike and foot.
Goodjourney.org.uk launched in 2018, supported by a coalition of transport and conservation organisations. The aim was to address the need for more sustainable visitor travel in the UK.
Car travel for leisure is growing every year. Most visitor attractions revolve around cars. Travel
information is poor and public transport patchy. Around 60% of scope 3 (indirect) CO2 emissions
from tourist attractions are from visitors’ cars. Getting more visitors arriving by train, bus, bike and foot is key to cutting carbon, congestion, and opening up access for the 22% of UK households without a car.
Impact
A growing number of attractions are now joining Good Journey. They are offering easy travel information and discounts for car-free visitors. Good Journey members are pioneering travel solutions, from shuttlebuses to cycle paths.
Results include:
- 5,000 people a week using goodjourney.org.uk
- 12,000 car-free visits to 11 pilot English Heritage sites
- 17,000 people visiting RHS gardens by bus in 2024
- 100,000+ car journeys a year taken off the roads.
In 2024, Good Journey also delivered partnerships with Suffolk County Council, Visit Kent, Visit Peak District, Traveline and the National Trust.
In 2025, the project is scaling up to respond to the wide range of partners and opportunities opening up. This includes using the funding to help increase income and capacity, developing enhanced partnership packages for national organisations, local authorities and destinations, as well as building a carbon calculator for visitor travel to attractions.
