Focus of work

Travelling Light aims to bring about transformative and sustainable change in the way local people and visitors travel in, and to, the Hope Valley. It will promote walking and cycling for everyday purposes, encourage use of bus and rail, and reduce the current high dependency on vehicles powered by fossil fuels.

The Hope Valley is in the heart of the Peak District National Park. It has several million car-borne day visitors each year, and a local population of around 9,000. Travelling Light is a project of Hope Valley Climate Action (HVCA). Support from the Foundation is enabling HCVA to carry out the development stage for a nationally significant five-year project.

Impact

The travel and transport work of HVCA has already had an impact. They carried out a survey of over 500 local people, which demonstrated an appetite for more sustainable travel. They arranged a successful pilot ‘try an e-bike’ event before lock-down and plan another in each village.

HCVA have engaged parish councils and other local organisations in debate and local surveys in support of traffic management and 20mph speed limits in villages. They have secured the support of Derbyshire County Council, the Peak District National Park Authority, and local MP Robert Largan.
