Focus of work
The focus of this study is to explore the full range of benefits and co-benefits associated with a reduction in the reliance on vehicles in urban neighbourhoods. Seeking to answer the question “What would happen if residential streets had no cars?”, the study will undertake a comprehensive cost benefit analysis exploring both the direct and indirect costs of sustainable solutions to urban travel that are not dominated by cars.
Impact
- Through the lens of an individual street or neighbourhood, generate a comprehensive overview of the range of impacts associated with a car-dominated society versus one that is not car-dominated
- Using a temporal approach, identify and quantify the sequence of likely events following removal of private vehicles from residential streets
- Create a blue-sky vision for sustainable urban roads and communities, understanding the potential impact on human health, societal cohesion, and the environment.
