Focus of work
This project aims to improve public transport in the north of England and nationally. Through training and developing a team of people, Citizens UK will transform listening and stories into winnable asks that will shape and influence policy.
They will campaign locally to improve services and get more people using public transport in their area. Citizens UK will develop a national policy ask to present to MPs and the metro mayors at the Convention of the North, which will improve public transport across the north and UK-wide. Citizens UK will continue to work with ministers, mayors, councillors and officers to ensure the commitments made are delivered.
Impact
This new project aims to have an impact on multiple levels:
- Local wins for transport campaigns in one city or location, whether that be reducing fares for young people, securing an additional bus stop or ensuring citizen accountability of transport providers.
- The development of a national policy which would benefit public transport users UK-wide. This could be around affordability, reliability, safety or funding of transport services. It would have positive impacts on physical and mental health, social isolation, employment and reduce carbon emissions.
- They aim for the work to be scalable, allowing them to replicate similar work in other areas, especially those with increased power through devolution.
- Working with local people develops their skills and confidence personally and shows them how to participate meaningfully in public life.
