Focus of work
KenEx tram is a proposal for a light rail tram connection across the River Thames between Grays (Thurrock) and Ebbsfleet (North Kent) in the heart of The Thames Estuary Growth area.
The tram would provide an essential north-south connection between regional high-speed rail and local rail hubs, enabling an integrated and enhanced local economy.
FIT funding will support the development of a business case to present to investors and government.

Impact
For communities, the KenEx tram would provide a fast, reliable and sustainable alternative to car travel, reducing congestion and improving air quality. It would link residents to jobs, education and services on both sides of the river, especially important for areas with limited existing cross-river public transport such as the Thames Estuary Growth area.
For businesses, the connection would expand labour and customer markets, making it easier for employers to attract staff and for shoppers and visitors to access retail, leisure and commercial areas. Improved connectivity would stimulate investment, encourage regeneration of underused land, and support the development of Ebbsfleet Garden City and Thurrock’s growth zones.
With interchange at the existing Ebbsfleet International station, the tramway promotes the attractiveness of international rail via Eurostar, Virgin and other operators, supporting the transition to low-carbon transport and enhancing the economic resilience of the Thames Estuary region.
