Like2Bike supports children to cycle by running whole school cycling for years 3 to 6 in four schools in Hackney, London. The classes happen at least one day a week, every week of the academic year, and include extensive cycle training, racing, after-school club, bike loans, bike fixing and bike buses, which support and encourage children’s cycling to and from school.
Impact
Like2Bike has established a bike bus at three schools in Hackney to help create safer roads for children and achieve a shift from motor traffic to active travel.
The project has been a fantastic success at the Orchard School, with eighteen buses and over 200 trips for pupils since May 2023. The Like2Bike Bus has enabled children who are less likely to cycle to get involved, including more girls than boys across years one to six.
Feedback from parents at the school has been very positive and the bike bus will now be running throughout the year, with a vision for parents to lead the bus themselves.
In the future, a travel survey will collect information about the modes of transport used to and from the schools. This will help Like2Bike to understand the project’s impact and any impact on the reduction of car traffic. The bike buses will also be relaunched in the two other schools, Hoxton Garden and Southwold, and will focus on encouraging more children to get involved this time.
