Focus of work
This project from the International Development Foundation for Community Integration and Support Services aims to raise awareness of public transport services in Nottingham among vulnerable and marginalised West African communities, particularly older adults, low-income households, disabled residents, migrants, refugees and asylum seekers.
The project aims to:
- Provide travel support and signposting services to enable essential journeys to healthcare services, training, community activities and social support services, reducing isolation and improving wellbeing.
- Deliver Inclusive Mobility awareness clinics that offer practical guidance on using public transport, journey planning, understanding transport rights and navigating mobility challenges, with tailored one-to-one and group support.
- Offer culturally sensitive outreach and engagement, delivered through trusted African community networks, faith groups, cultural groups and grassroots organisations to ensure accessibility and trust.
- Increase awareness of sustainable and equitable transport options.
- Strengthen confidence and independence among participants, enabling them to travel safely, affordably and with dignity.
- Gather insights and lived experience feedback from West African residents to inform future transport planning, highlight systemic barriers and support long-term improvements in inclusive mobility across Nottingham.
Impact
This projects equips underserved communities with the knowledge, confidence and tools to use public transport independently, reducing transport exclusion and supporting modal shift by helping participants move from car reliance or immobility to active engagement with public systems.
By enabling more people to participate in low-carbon travel, this projects aims to build a fairer, greener future where transport works for everyone.
