Focus of work
Transport for All is a pan-impairment, disabled-led group striving to increase access to all modes of transport and streetspace across the UK. It works with its members to fight for transport access, championing disabled and older people’s rights and providing a community of support.
Transport for All’s work focuses on the intersections between disability, infrastructure and the environment. Disabled voices are central to action on climate as they are among the most severely impacted by increased pollution levels and the disastrous effects of climate change.
This project aimed to ensure that the voices of disabled people are heard in policy debates on reducing car use, and that the diverse range of views and perspectives within the disabled community are put to decision makers.
Impact
Transport for All consulted with disabled people to represent their voices in policy debates on reducing car use. Eleven people were interviewed to better understand why they use cars, as well as the impact road user charging and Clean Air Zones may have.
Interviews with those with respiratory conditions found that there was generally a lack of consultation within their community about Clean Air Zones, with the zones having a negative impact on disabled people who have difficulty using public transport.
The findings from these interviews were used to develop policy recommendations, with the support of Asthma + Lung UK and the Institute for Public Policy Research, to mitigate the negative impacts of Clean Air Zones on disabled people.
