Focus of work
This grant is supporting IPPR and Element Energy to work together to shift the transport system in a fairer, greener and healthier direction.
Over two crucial years in the UK’s political cycle, IPPR’s work will present the case and roadmap for rapid and deep reductions in transport emissions as part of the move to a fairer transport system, show how this action can be shared across society, and tell the story of its impact on people’s lives.
Impact
Since the launch of the project, there have been several key achievements in the form of research published, including:
- Publication of a landmark report about transport’s path to net zero: Moving together: A people-focussed pathway to fairer and greener transport (29 May 2024).
- On the side of motorists (IPPR blog, 3 August 2023)
- Where are we going? Transport priorities for the next UK government (IPPR briefing, 7 February 2024)
- Who gets a good deal? Revealing public attitudes to transport in Great Britain (IPPR report, 1 April 2024)
- The transport challenge for low-income households (IPPR report, 15 July 2025)
- Fairer is faster: The route to greener and healthier domestic transport (IPPR research, 27 August 2025)
The research produced so far has been disseminated widely and is being very well received.
Professor Lorraine Whitmarsh, Director of the Centre for Climate Change and Social Transformations (CAST), says: “This research has provided the most detailed evidence on public attitudes to sustainable travel options in recent years, drawing on theory and practice to provide robust and valuable insights for policy-makers to advance net zero transport.”
