Travelling Light, Hope Valley Climate Action

Making low-carbon travel the first choice for journeys in and into Hope Valley, thanks to an integrated system of high-quality public transport.
Hope Valley Climate Action

Focus of work

Hope Valley Climate Action’s main project, Travelling Light, is a nationally significant sustainable travel initiative aimed at making low-carbon travel the first choice for journeys in and into Hope Valley. They are focusing on four key areas: inclusive active travel, integrated public transport, reduced fossil fuel dependency, and innovation to spread change. Their vision is for the beautiful Hope Valley to be a great place to live, work, and visit, thanks to an integrated system of high-quality public transport linked to excellent walking and cycling routes, as well as shared electric cars and bikes. This will result in safer, quieter roads, healthier residents and visitors, and a flourishing natural environment as low-emission and active travel options become the norm.

  • Engaged pupils and staff in walk to school projects in eight Hope Valley primary schools
  • Campaigned successfully for a new bus service (High Peak 62) to link the Hope Valley to Buxton for the first time, seven days a week
  • Organised a Cycling for All rally with 60 attendees, including the local MP
  • Promoted the concept of mobility hubs based on Hope Valley stations – Bamford station has now been identified as a priority hub
  • Developed a 20mph speed limit campaign for the area
  • Ran the Use the Bus campaign, in partnership with bus operators and Derbyshire County Council – attracting constructive feedback from over 50 people on areas for improvement
  • Campaigned successfully with others for the local rail service to call at every station, every hour – the Northern Rail timetable from December 2022 includes this level of service for the first time. Hope Valley Climate Action would like timetables to meet the demands of increasing passenger numbers. For example, the most popular station Edale has seen a 20% rise in passenger numbers since 2020.
  • Worked with Derbyshire County Council on a successful bid to Midlands Connect for funds to develop and promote a new platform for sharing lifts, vehicles and electric vehicle (EV) charging points, with the Hope Valley as a pilot area
  • Derbyshire County Council has supported the Travelling Light project. They have prepared a Hope Valley Active Travel Masterplan to identify schemes that make cycling and walking safer and more appealing for everyday journeys
