Focus of work
Women on Wheels is a cycling group in Glasgow, created by women for women. It empowers women of all backgrounds and abilities to become confident cyclists.
The group runs a Tuesday cycling session specifically for refugee women and women seeking asylum in Glasgow. These women often find transport costs a huge barrier, and FIT’s funding was used to pay for their bus fares so that they could access the sessions.
As a result of the funding, Women on Wheels delivered 46 learn to ride sessions and 32 led rides to its Cycle Sisters group. It reached over 182 participants and around 30 individuals, showing that many women come along regularly each week.
The bus money received by FiT has made these sessions accessible as the women travel from all across Glasgow to come to these sessions.
Impact
This funding allowed Women on Wheels to help refugee and women seeking asylum across Glasgow to access its service. The sessions are invaluable to these women – supporting their physical and mental health, building their community, as well as increasing their confidence and independence with cycling.
A real community has been created, friendships formed and the women coming along can enjoy the joy and freedom cycling together brings. Comments from participants included:
It was a happy and peaceful time for me. Thanks for organising everything and for all your effort.
We really appreciate the time you spend with us and the hours you dedicate to teaching and accompanying us in cycling. These programs not only give us confidence, but also make us feel more relaxed and belong.
Thank you for your support and hard work behind the scenes in providing facilities, travel expenses and organizing such events. I hope these programs continue.
